Chapter 12

The following morning, I entered through the front door of TMP’s office and practically tip-toed down the hall, eyes glued to the floor. I was still pondering how to handle the impulsive kiss I planted on Davis and definitely needed more time. I quietly and successfully slipped past his office.

“Olivia?”

Okay, so I didn’t successfully slip past his office. I froze. Maybe I only imagined someone called my name.

“Olivia.”

Damn it.

I turned toward his open door. He was seated behind his desk, wearing the same smile as usual.

“Hey, Davis. Good morning.” My face was hot, and no doubt flushed.

He extended his open hand toward one of the chairs in front of his desk. “Would you please close the door and have a seat?”

I set my guitar case on the floor, shut the door, and eased into the chair. I folded my arms across my chest. “What’s up?”

He grinned at me and tapped his pencil steadily on his desktop.

I raised my eyebrows in a manner that I hoped would suggest that he go first.

“Are we going to talk about it?” he asked.

I moved my head an inch forward and tilted it to one side while furrowing my brow. That was my best Darn, I’m clueless look.

He raised his eyebrows. “Well?”

“Talk about… what?”

“You know.”

“Sorry. Not following you…”

“When we said goodnight last night—you know—the kiss…”

I put my index finger on my chin and lifted my eyes upward, thinking. “Oh. Right. I remember now.”

Davis’s eyes narrowed. “Olivia. I’d rather we didn’t play games. We both know what happened, and I think it’s something we should address.”

I learned right then never to kiss an executive who has honed his managerial skills for analyzing, dissecting, and interpreting every little thing.

“It was just a kiss,” I said.

“Just a kiss?” He lowered his voice. “I couldn’t sleep last night.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Do we have to talk about this?”

He stood, walked to the front of his desk, and sat in the chair next to me. “We don’t have to, but I think we should. We work together. I don’t want it to get awkward. Olivia, I like you a lot. I can’t deny it.”

“I like you too.”

“Do you think there’s a chance we can take this to another level? I’d like to spend more time with you. And I don’t mean here at work.”

I was silent for a moment, thinking of what to say. “Davis, I think you’re great. I really do. You’re the kind of guy I hoped I’d someday find. But I think we should take it slow. Let things develop organically. Maybe we’ll discover that we have something here. Let’s see.”

He leaned back and sighed. “All right.”

“The thing is, everything’s new to me here. I’m still in a high-speed wobble and trying to get my life under control. Among other things, I need to find a part-time job. So, I don’t need to complicate things further—not just yet. I don’t regret kissing you; that wasn’t an accident. But at the same time, I know I misled you by doing that, and I’m sorry.
